Metropolitan ring solutions enable businesses to handle multiple voice and data applications on a single network. Instead of maintaining various access connections at each building, offices and data centers can be linked to each other, common carriers, the Internet and wide area network facilities through a ring.

SONET is an internationally recognized optical transport standard that provides high-speed, fiber-based full-duplex capabilities for voice, video and data. Many businesses use SONET as a dedicated private network to carry traffic between metro locations, service providers and Internet facilities.

DWDM is often used because it can carry SONET traffic along with other protocols, effectively multiplying the capacity of a standard SONET ring.
